Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Community-based magazines have emerged as essential tools for disseminating health-related information, especially in regions with limited access to digital platforms. In Dutse Local Government, Jigawa State, these magazines serve as vital channels for health campaigns, addressing topics such as maternal health, hygiene, nutrition, and disease prevention (Garba & Musa, 2024). Their localized content, often presented in indigenous languages, resonates with the community and promotes engagement. Research has shown that culturally relevant and community-centered messaging significantly increases the adoption of healthy behaviors (Ahmed & Bello, 2023). Despite the growth of digital media, community-based magazines maintain their relevance by catering to underserved populations, especially in rural areas where literacy levels are sufficient for magazine consumption. This study explores the effectiveness of these magazines in delivering health campaign messages, measuring their impact on awareness, attitudes, and behaviors within Dutse Local Government.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While community-based magazines hold potential for health education, their effectiveness in driving behavior change remains underexplored in Dutse Local Government. Challenges such as limited distribution, low engagement among younger demographics, and competition from other media platforms may hinder their impact (Bello & Yusuf, 2023). Additionally, the content of these magazines might not always align with the needs or preferences of the target audience, limiting their utility in health campaigns. This study investigates the extent to which community-based magazines contribute to health awareness and behavior modification, identifying gaps and recommending improvements.
